Reinhard Frötschner, M.A., studied East European and South Eastern European history, early modern and modern history, and Slavonic philology (focus: Russian literature) at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. Having finished his studies in 1994, he took part in the DFG project "Das Bild des Krieges im Wandel vom Mittelalter zur Frühen Neuzeit" as a research associate. From 1998 until 2000 he assisted Professor Frank Kämpfer at the department of Eastern European history at the University of Münster. From 1994 until 1998 he joined the Institute for East European Studies, working at the History Department as a research associate. Since 2000 he has been working at the Institute for East European Studies again. At the editorial department of "Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas", Reinhard Frötschner is in charge of the book review section. As an assistant lecturer at the department of Eastern European and South Eastern European history of LMU Munich, he has been contributing to the course programme since the summer term of 2004 by conducting introductory seminars on the history of medieval Russia.
Reinhard Frötschner's research is focused on the Muscovite Rus', conducting research on cultural history, intellectual history, and the history of consciousness. Currently, he is working on a doctorate under Professor Edgar Hösch. He is writing his thesis on the topic: "Das Bild des Krieges im Moskauer Reich unter Zar Ivan IV. Groznyj". Numerous trips (due to conferences, research, but also private interest) to Russia and other states of the former Soviet Union have lead to Reinhard Frötschner improving his language abilities and his knowledge of the region.
