Michael Knogler studied economics at the University of Regensburg. In 1981 he finished his studies, earning an advanced degree in economics. Having been at BayWa AG as a management trainee for several years, he took part in the postgraduate studies on Eastern Europe at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich as a scholarship holder of the Volkswagen Foundation from 1985 until 1987. Having finished his postgraduate studies, he obtained a position as an academic assistant at the Institut für Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft Ost- und Südosteuropas of LMU Munich until 1988. From 1989 until 1992 he worked as a scientific speaker at the Erlangen-based Institut für Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft, where he focused on science policies and technology policies in Eastern Europe. In early 1992 he was awarded a "Dr. oec. publ." at the University of Munich. Since 1993 he has been a research associate at the Institute for East European Studies.
His research focuses: development of labour markets and comparative analysis of institutions of the labour markets of new EU member states, demographic developments and social security systems in Eastern Europe, as well as political advice.
