Hermann Beyer-Thoma studied East European and Modern History, Political Sciences and Slavic Studies at Munich University and did his PhD in 1987 on „Communists and Social Democrats in Finland, 1944 – 1948. From 1987 to 1992 he directed several research projects at the Osteuropa-Institut. Since 1992 he has been permanently employed. Until June 2008 he acted as copy-editor of the monographic serieses of the Institute und directed several projects. Since then he has been head of the Editorial Department of Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas and Head of Department in the Virtual Library Eastern Europe.
His actual research interests are the history of migration between Russia and Germany and the history of education in Russia in the 18th – 19th centuries.
