Evžen Kočenda and Jan Hanousek at the Institute for East European Studies
On 1 December 2010 Prof. Dr. Evžen Kočenda and Prof. Dr. Jan Hanousek from CERGE, Charles University in Prague, were guests at the Institute for East European Studies and presented their paper "Public Investments and Fiscal Performance in New EU Member States".

Jens Hölscher als Gastwissenschaftler am OEI
Vom 13. - 17. Dezember war Dr. Jens Hölscher von der Universität Brighton erneut als Visiting Fellow am OEI zu Gast. Am 16. Dezember referierte er hier zum Thema: „The gloves are off: State aid in the enlarged European Union".

Jens Hölscher visiting fellow at the Institute for East European Studies
From 25 to 29 of October Jens Hölscher, MSc, PhD (University of Brighton) was a Visiting Fellow at the OEI Regensburg. Jens Hölscher, MSc, PhD (FU Berlin) is Reader in Economics at the University of Brighton and Head of the Research Group Economic and Social Transition. Previously he taught at the Universities of Berlin, Swansea, Birmingham and Chemnitz. He held Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Halle (IWH), Bonn (ZEI), Bolzano-Bozen, Frankfurt (Viadrina), New Brunswick in Cairo, Almaty (KIMEP) and the Centre of Economic Research at the Deutsche Bundesbank. He is interested in monetary and transition economics, both areas in which he published widely. He is the co-editor of Palgrave's (Macmillan's Global Publishing) book series "Studies in Economic Transition" and President of the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies.

Within the research project ‘International Comparison of Social Models' Prof. Dr. Fidelis Lankes (Munich University of Applied Sciences) and OEI-economist Michael Knogler did comparative research on social models in Eastern Europe.

Research on Industrial Land Use in Kazakhstan
The main drivers of contemporary economic growth in Kazakhstan, extractive industries and metallurgy, cause high levels of soil pollution without being taxed adequately. Financed by DAAD, during a 3 months research stay at OEI Dr. Gaukhar Makahsova from the Economic Research Institute under the Kazakh Ministry of Economic Development and Trade will research the question of how to introduce environmental taxation of industrial land use in Kazakhstan.

Elena Vishlenkova and Trude Maurer visiting fellows from June 20 to June 30, 2010
Vortrag_MaurerProfessor Elena Vishlenkova (State University – School of economics, Moscow) and Professor Trude Maurer (Göttingen University) are specialized in university history. At our Institute, they will do comparative research on the initial phases of women’s higher education in Russia and Germany. On June 29, 2010, at 1 p.m. Trude Maurer presented the results and the outlines for their further studies.

Visitors from Kazakhstan
Jerger AimagambetovOn 12.4.2010, Prof. Yerkera Aimagambetov, rector of the Karaganda University of Economics, paid a visit to the Osteuropa-Institut. We intensively discussed projects that build upon the recently concluded Tempus project "New Curricula in Trade Theory and Econometrics", in which the Karaganda University participated. Prof. Aimagametov is very keen to continue and deepen the collaboration in research and academic teaching, particularly in the field of advanced training of academic staff.

Visitors from Poland
Besuch_ChelmWith the assistance of the university of Regensburg on 14/04/2010 three librarians of the State Vocational School Chelm (Poland) visited the OEI. After a brief overview of the activities of the OEI and the WiOS, Barbara Polakowska, Maria Bajko and Teresa Chyla were guided through the reading room and stacks of the library. They showed also great interest in the following discussion on the differences and similarities in the educational systems of Poland and Germany.

From 1 to 26 of February, Prof. Dr. Evžen Kočenda (CERGE, Karls-Universität Prag) was a Visiting Fellow at the OEI Regensburg. Evžen Kočenda is Professor of Economics at the Charles University in Prague. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Houston. He has taught at the New York University and Université Paris IX - Dauphin. Affiliated with the William Davidson Institute, CEPR, and EABCN. Member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Comparative Economics (2004-2006), Economic Systems (since 2009) and the Czech Journal of Finance and Economics (since 1998). Main areas of research include applied econometrics and European integration. On February 23 he gave a lecture on “Divide and Privatize: Firms Break-up and Performance”.
