Achim Schmillen at the Nobel Laureate Meeting at Lindau
From August 23 to August 27, 2011 Achim Schmillen of the Department of Economics, Migration and Integration took part in the 4th Meeting of Economics Nobel Laureates at Lindau (Bavaria). At the meeting 17 laureates (among them George Akerlof, Robert Mundell and Joseph Stiglitz) and 370 young economists from 65 countries discussed the future of economics as a discipline, the sustainability of healthcare and old-age welfare systems and recent labor market developments. The Nobel Laureate Meetings at Lindau have been organized annually since 1951; the first meeting on economic sciences took place in 2004.

Ekaterina Selezneva in Odessa
Ekaterina Selezneva gave several lectures at the HESP Regional Seminar for Excellence in Teaching (ReSET) "Wealth, Poverty and Life Satisfaction in Transition Societies" at the Odessa National University (Ukraine). Topics of the lectures covered the notion of subjective well-being and its components, measurement and modelling problems, and a selection of results based on the transitional countries' data. The ReSET project aims to develop and support teaching excellence in the humanities and social sciences at the undergraduate university level.

Achim Schmillen at the Pennsylvania Economic Association
From June 2 to 4, 2011 Achim Schmillen of the Department of Economics, Migration and Integration took part in the Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Economic Association at Dickinson College in Carlisle (Pennsylvania/USA). At the conference he presented his paper on "Long-Term Effects of Occupational Choice on Unemployment - First Evidence from German Registry Data".

Manuela Troschke in Passau
On June 15th Manuela Troschke gave a presentation on "The Russian Energy Sector: Needed, Used up, Misused?" at an International Experts Seminar devoted to the effects of the financial crisis on Russia, financed by the DAAD and hosted by the University of Passau. After the presentation, Mrs. Troschke answered multiple questions of participants from science, politics and business circles on recent developments of the Russian economy.

Katrin Boeckh in Kiev
In June, an international conference on "Legal Aspects of the Struggle against Corruption: Experiences in Ukraine, Germany, and Poland" was organized in Kiev by the Institute for Law in Eastern Europe, Munich and the Institute for Legislation at the Verhovna Rada of Ukraine. One of the introductory speeches was given by OEI-historian Katrin Boeckh, who delivered a lecture on "Corruption as a Habsburg Heritage. Historical and Economic Observations".

Achim Schmillen nominated for Sir Alec Cairncross Prize
From April 4 to April 6, 2011 Achim Schmillen of the Department of Economics, Migration and Integration took part in the annual conference of the Scottish Economic Society in Perth (Scotland). At the conference he presented his paper "The Exporter Wage Premium Reconsidered - Destinations, Distances and Linked Employer-Employee Data". This study was one of three to be nominated for the Sir Alec Cairncross Prize, awarded annually by the Scottish Economic Society "for the best paper by a younger member of the Society".

Ekaterina Selezneva in St. Petersburg
On April 14th, the Institute for East European Studies and the Gender Studies Program of the European University at Saint-Petersburg held a joint seminar on "Social Norms and Life Satisfaction. The Role of Women in Family and Society" within the framework of "Deutsche Woche in St. Petersburg". During the meeting, participants discussed transformations of private life and gender roles that occur in contemporary Russia and Germany. They also considered the impact which these transformations have on women's subjective life satisfaction. In the seminar researchers from the Institute for East European Studies (Ekaterina Selezneva) and the European University at St. Petersburg (Vera Galindabaeva, Ekaterina Borozdina) presented findings of their recent projects.

From 4-7 April Michael Knogler, Ekaterina Selezneva and Miriam Frey participated in the "XII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development" at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Michael Knogler presented his paper "Social Models in the Enlarged European Union: Policy Dimensions and Country Classification" (joint work with Fidelis Lankes from the University of Applied Sciences Munich). Ekaterina Selezneva talked about "What makes Russian Women (un)happy?" and Miriam Frey gave a speech on "The Effects of Trade Liberalization between the EU and Ukraine in a Computable General Equilibrium Model" (joint paper with Zoryana Olekseyuk-Viber).

Alexander M. Danzer in Dushanbe
In March, members of the research team of the project "Migration and Remittances in Central Asia" met in the Tajik capital Dushanbe to start preparations for a nationally representative household survey that will be conducted later this year. Alexander M. Danzer, who attended the meetings as a representative of the OEI Regensburg, met staff of several research and survey institutes.

Presentation on church policy in Ukraine by Katrin Boeckh
OEI historian Katrin Boeckh spoke about "Kirchenpolitik in der Ukraine und die staatliche/nationale Identität" (Church policy in Ukraine and state/national identity) at the annual conference of the DGO (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde e.V.) with the topic „Integration und Desintegration. Ordnungsmodelle in Europa 20 Jahre nach Auflösung der Sowjetunion" (Integration and disintegration. Political models in Europe 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union). Boeckh's conclusion was that after the end of Soviet rule the various religious communities in Ukraine proved to be a factor of integration in public space, especially for the civil society, by their willingness to engage in dialogue.

From 16-18 March 2011 Miriam Frey participated in the 13th Göttinger Workshop "Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen" (International Economic Relations) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen and presented her paper „Effects of Trade Liberalization between the EU and Ukraine in a Computable General Equilibrium Model" (joint work with Zoryana Olekseyuk-Viber from the University of Duisburg-Essen).

Miriam Frey in Brighton
On 18 February 2011 Miriam Frey participated in the 25th Research Seminar of the Managing Economic Transition Network. The seminar took place in Brighton and was organised by the Economic & Social Transition (EST) Research Group of the University of Brighton in cooperation with the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies. In the session "country studies" Miriam Frey gave a speech on "Effects of Trade Liberalization between the EU and Ukraine in a Computable General Equilibrium Model" (joint paper with Zoryana Olekseyuk-Viber from the University of Duisburg-Essen).

Visit of Bavarian Minister for European affairs in WiOS
Invited by the OEI, on January 21, 2011 Emilia Müller, Bavarian Minister for federal and European affairs, visited the WiOS. Within the framework of "Regensburg lectures" she talked about "Bavaria in the Danube region - driving force for European integration." In the ensuing discussion she debated the Bavarian aims within the strategy concerning the Danube region which is compiled on behalf of the council of Europe to coordinate common interests of the directly and indirectly adjacent states and to take European integration forward in this European macroregion.

In January 2011 Ksenija Ursulenko gave an intensive SPSS-course for a Kazakh project partner (CIOM) in Almaty. The course consisted of a wide range of topics including data management, validation and methods of multivariate data analysis.
