Department of History

Research

The Department of History  has been an important component since the founding of the Institute for East European Studies. The Department researches cultural history in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the Baltic Sea region and Finland. There is a special focus on church-state relations during the period of "real existing socialism" and on economic and cultural exchange between Germany and Russia.

Links

The head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Martin Schulze Wessel, is also a professor of History (Eastern and South-Eastern Europe) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Other History Department personnel teach at the University as well.

Publication

The Department of History administers various series and journals including the internationally regarded Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas (Yearbook for the History of Eastern Europe) along with Schriften zur Geistesgeschichte des östlichen Europa (Writings on the Intellectual History of Eastern Europe) and the "Veröffentlichungen des Osteuropa-Instituts München" (Working Papers) on "History and Research on the Baltic Sea Region". Commissioned studies are also produced for public authorities, particularly regarding external settler issues.

Engagement

The Department of History offers a comprehensive range of scholarly information. In cooperation with the Institute's library and the Internet site Vifaost, the Department provides a database of essays on Eastern European history, a specialist biography on medieval Russia, progressive research documentation and a calendar of events.

Personnel

The Department of History has two permanent full-time research positions, a secretariat, and various project-specific positions. Most personnel hold part-time positions.
